Our ‘Biodiversity Conservation Project’, on the other hand, also makes a contribution to environmental sustainability, as the loss of biodiversity is one of the leading causes for climate change. On 2020 World Environment Day, we partnered up with Kocaeli University’s Biology Department, where endemic plants are saved from extinction. This project began with the propagation of the Amsonia Orientalis plant, known as the Blue Star. The second phase of this project continued in 2022 with another plant, Pancratium maritimum, also known as the Sea Daffodil, which has been listed as an endangered species. In the third phase of this project, we completed our studies to prevent the Verbascum bugulifolium plant, also known as the Riva Mullein, from becoming extinct, as of 2024. The fourth phase of our project, the Centaurea kilaea plant, also known as the Kilyon Button, was propagated and reintroduced back into nature in 2025. In the fifth phase of the project, the propagation of the Cirsium byzantinum plant began, where it is ultimately aimed to be saved from extinction as well.

In line with our core values and long-term sustainability vision, as well as our environmentally responsible approach, we have been implementing social responsibility projects that create a positive impact on biodiversity—one of the key pillars of sustainability.

Through our Biodiversity Conservation Project, we aim to contribute to environmental sustainability in collaboration with the Biology Department of Kocaeli University. The project was initiated on World Environment Day in 2020 and focuses on preventing endemic plant species from becoming extinct through scientific and biotechnological methods. Biodiversity loss is one of the leading drivers of climate change, making the protection of natural ecosystems a critical priority for a sustainable future.

The first phase of the project began with the Amsonia orientalis plant, also known as the Blue Star, which was identified by the European Commission in 2002 as a species requiring absolute preservation. This endemic plant is known to exist only in a limited number of locations in Turkey’s Marmara Region and is believed to have become extinct in Greece. Through this pioneering university–industry collaboration, Amsonia orientalis was successfully propagated using biotechnological methods and reintroduced into its natural habitat, making a significant contribution to biodiversity preservation.

The second phase of the project continued in 2022 with Pancratium maritimum, commonly known as the Sea Daffodil, an endangered plant species. Laboratory studies were conducted to protect the species from extinction. In parallel, we became the main supporter of the theatre play “The Sea Daffodils”, staged at Zorlu PSM, raising public awareness by combining environmental sustainability with culture and the arts. This phase of the project, which contributed to sustainability from both environmental and social perspectives, was recognized with two national and two international awards in categories such as sustainability initiative of the year, culture and arts, and communications.

In the third phase, completed as of 2024, we successfully carried out studies to prevent Verbascum bugulifolium, also known as the Riva Mullein, from becoming extinct. The fourth phase of the project focused on Centaurea kilaea, also known as the Kilyon Button, which was propagated and reintroduced into nature in 2025.

Building on these efforts, the fifth phase of the project has begun with the propagation of Cirsium byzantinum plant, with the ultimate goal of saving this endemic species from extinction as well.

We continue to work towards a more sustainable world, firmly believing that the preservation of biodiversity is essential for safeguarding ecosystems and creating a sustainable world for generations to come.
